Balance is a combination of proprioception, reactivity in the nervous system, and strength of the muscular system. Proprioception is the nervous system’s ability to know where our body is in space. This can be increased dramatically with intentional exercises. As we increase proprioception, we will also develop reactive muscular patterns by training the stabilizers of our limbs to automatically engage to prevent involuntary weight shifting. In contrast, we will also train our body to deliberately shift weight forward, back or side to side, both on hands and feet. Lastly, we will work on increasing strength of the muscles involved in balance, including the muscles that surround the ankles, hips (knees as well), wrists and shoulders.

The Balance Immersion focuses on providing you with the necessary techniques and exercises to increase your overall balance and proprioception (ability to feel where your body is in space and in relationship to itself).
- Tree Pose, Standing Hand-to-Foot Variations, Half Moon, Side Plank
- Handstand, Headstand, Warrior III
- Exercises and techniques to strengthen the stabilizer muscles of the ankles, hips, hands and shoulders.
Through this yoga immersion, focused on increasing balance, you will find a new relationship with your body and ultimately feel better on a daily basis. To increase balance, we will do postures that help us develop proprioception, which is your nervous system’s way of knowing where your body is in space and in relationship to itself. It has been shown that inversions like handstand in particular can increase proprioception dramatically — but it must be done with the intent to feel and sense where our body is. Handstand will be a large part of this immersion, but not for the purpose of attaining the posture (though that may be the result), but rather to increase our proprioceptive ability. Balance is a combination of proprioception, reactivity in the nervous system, and strength of the muscular system. Developing these three is the goal and path of this immersion.

IS THIS TOO ADVANCED FOR ME?
Matt specializes in teaching ALL levels of yoga practices, providing modifications and options throughout each class. These immersions are suitable for anyone with 1-3 months of yoga practice or more. You do not need to have a regular practice, nor do you need to be flexible or strong. First-time yogis are welcomed so long as you have no major injuries. Each class focuses on a different yoga pose in order for you to gain a greater understanding of your body within the asana practice.

Covid_19 bought Matt into my home and my yoga practice. This last month I have learn’t so much it has deepened my practice and my understanding of the anatomy & biomechanics and how we use both in every asana we practice. He has also helped in my teaching, ie asking my students to think about the foot as a tripod “big toe, pinkie toe, heel ” I never imagined I would learn so much from the immersion.
