empower your teaching Skills with the strength of community.

What is Chromatic Yoga?

Developed by Matt Giordano, Chromatic grew from the desire to build a system of education for yoga teachers with community as a core value. Chromatic Yoga is not only a place to learn and grow as a teacher, but also a way to surround yourself with supportive, kindhearted yogis around the world. Community is one of our greatest sources of inspiration, and as Chromatic teachers we support one another and pull from one another’s strengths, which collectively enables us to have a greater foundation of knowledge to offer our students.

After 10 years of practicing tons of different styles and teaching around the world, Matt realized something: Everyone has a different opinion about what yoga is, and everyone believes that theirs is the right one. Over his years of teaching therapeutics Matt quickly realized that not one single approach was suitable for all people. Over time he began to embrace contrasting opinions rather than reject them. This basic mindset is the premise of Chromatic Yoga: welcome contrast as a key to learning, and a catalyst for growth of the individual and the community.

Chromatic Yoga is a community of yogis, movers, health enthusiasts, learners, supporters, and transformation seekers, who approach life and yoga from a place of Gratitude, Courage, and Curiosity. Self Awareness is both the goal and the way. Through breath, body, and mind, Chromatic Yogis seek to expand into their own potential. Step by Step, Action is key to maximize expansion and minimize wasted effort. No goal, vision, or dream is too big when you practice Gratitude for where you are now, have the Courage to move into the unknown, and readiness to take the small steps (Action) toward your potential.

Chromatic Yoga is about embracing the spectrum of energy that life has to offer, and we use the elements of nature as our basis for self study. Students and teachers in this community look for ways to empower each other from their similarities as well as their differences. Rather than looking for ways to compete for power over one another, we look for ways to be self empowered while embracing the collective effort of the community – recognizing that we are stronger as a team, and that our team is stronger when the individuals have stepped into their full power. Chromatic Yoga is not better or more elite than any other practice, it is simply a home for those who want to connect, grow, and learn with other like and unlike minded people.

The physical practice is highly intentional but is not dogmatic. The teachers seek to be both humble and confident. The students strive to be open minded and focused. The teachers are students and the students are teachers, and all are willing to step into either roll based upon what serves themselves and the community best.

Transformation is the goal, but acceptance of where we are now and where we have been is the practice.

The Word Chromatic:

Derived from art and music, the word chromatic stems from the spectrum of color and sound. The masterful artists and musicians have the power to express themselves freely with all the colors and musical notes available to them. Chromatic Yogis seek the same level of mastery in self awareness and self expression through the way they move, think, feel, act, eat, and live life. Chromatic Yoga uses the spectrum of nature’s elements as a basis for self study.

“Chromatic Level 1 brought together the most incredible community of yoga teachers from all over the world. Learning from each other with this collective goal of deepening our yoga practice felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Brienne Thibodeau

“Level 1 was an incredibly valuable, informative, and life changing experience.”

Sue Owrutsky

“Chromatic training with Matt is one of the best things I have done for myself as a yoga teacher. Matt has created something special; teachers from all around the world gather and learn together, not only from Matt, but from each other. Everyone in the group has different strengths and it encourages discussions and learning opportunities based on the different view points.”

Anthony Tomasi

The Elements

At the heart of it, Chromatic Yoga is the study of the full spectrum, which stems from the meaning of the word Chromatic (spectrum of color or sound). The way we use it in Chromatic Yoga is to refer to the spectrum of life, and we use the elements as our basis for reflection and self awareness.

Chromatic welcomes all different philosophical backgrounds and encourages teachers and students to maintain an open mind, however we unite our differences through our study of the elements.

The system we explore includes the elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

H.E.A.R.T

Chromatic Yoga teachers strive to be Humber, Empowered, Authentic, Resourceful and Tactical. These five qualities are set in place not as a basis for perfection, but rather a basis for self study.

Humility and Empowerment on the left side of the acronym, make up the emotional side of how we want to be on and off the mat. We aim to show up with an open mind, while courageously sharing what we have to offer with our students. On the right side: resourceful and tactical,  we hone our skills as a community to study and build our own strengths, while looking to our fellow teachers for support. When delivering an experience we aim to do so in a highly intentional format. The A, Authenticity is at the center, and it is how we aim to be inside out outside of the classroom. Your unique qualities are not only welcomed, but celebrated here.

The beauty and power of the Chromatic community manifests itself in many ways. There is a diversity of experience that exists within the group that allows community members to both seek and offer support on a vast range of subjects and situations, an exchange that allows people to empower themselves while empowering others. If someone needs support while sequencing and theming a Yoga for trauma or yoga for addiction class, there is a mental health professional in the community whose experience and wisdom is uniquely suited to help. And if that same mental health professional needs support in an exploration of musculature in preparation for an anatomy workshop, there are both massage therapists and Structural Integration Bodyworkers who can offer support with expansive knowledge of the muscular systems. As the community grows, these exchanges increase in number and variety, ever deepening the pool of collective wisdom and support from which we can all draw.

Level 1: The Elements

This 5 Day training is designed for Yoga Teachers looking to expand their skillsets both as yogis and teachers. The Chromatic Yoga training is a highly structured approach to teaching that seeks to pull out the best in each teacher. My aim as the leader in these 5 days is to pull out the most authentic expression within each of you, and help you become the most powerful manifestation of yourself you can be. Rather than asking you to teach a certain style, Chromatic Yoga embraces the range of stylistic expression but helps each teacher to step into their fullest power!

Along with being open to a variety of stylistic expressions in asana, Chromatic Yoga Philosophy is also inclusive of various lineages. The one defining through-line that permeates the entire approach of Chromatic Yoga is our study and use of the Elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space. We use the elements as a basis for self reflection, personal growth, and transformation. The Elements are used as a guidance system as well as a communication tool which all Chromatic Yoga teachers study in order to strengthen the connection as a community. Community is one of the most highly valued aspects of this training. Each Level 1 Student will have a mentor to help support their individual growth and our collective growth as a community.

In the Level One Teacher Training You will Learn The Following:

  1. Anatomy – Mastering the ability to see “Joint Relationships” and learning how to decide which “Muscle Engagements” to emphasize in each posture
  2. Sequencing toward either a “Peak Pose” or “Peak Action”
  3. The Elements of Voice (level one) – Elements will also be applied to sequencing, practice, adjustments, coaching, and self reflection.
  4. Adjustment Philosophy, Guidelines, and Techniques
  5. Advancing Your Personal Practice

Take the next step and bring your students on a journey in to their heart. Level 2 is for those that want to take their teaching skills to a deeper level and provide a space for students to experience breakthroughs and revelations.

In this training you will learn the art of theming your classes in a way that is clear and effective. Level 2 Testimonials

Chromatic training with Matt is one of the best things I have done for myself as a yoga teacher. Matt has created something special; teachers from all around the world gather and learn together, not only from Matt, but from each other. Everyone in the group has different strengths and it encourages discussions and learning opportunities based on the different view points. I love how the training is at Matt’s house; he literally opens up his home and makes you feel so welcome and comfortable. The training was perfect for my learning style as it is structured but informal; feels like a group of friends/teachers hanging out talking yoga for 5 days. Ive been teaching for about 9 years and only after training with Matt the last 2, do i really feel confident in my knowledge of the human body and what is going on anatomically in the poses. I would recommend this training to anyone with any teaching style or background!

                  Chromatic Senior Teacher

In Chromatic Yoga Level 2 we were able to build upon the skills gained in Level 1 and solidify our knowledge of the body. We took it to the next level by incorporating a thematic throug-line into our sequences to give students the opportunity to learn and grow beyond a physical level. Matt always makes sure to give enough time to practice the things learned and leaves no questions unanswered.
Level 2 does not only help to refine our teaching techniques, but focusses very strongly on personal development by coaching sessions (pairs and group). In these we were able to learn on both sides: as the teacher / coach as well as the student / mentee. Matt has the ability to hold space for emotional breakthroughs and offers a save and very warm environment to open and grow. Coaching tied our group very strongly together and I have made friends with amazing fellow yoga teachers from all over the world, with whom I am still in contact with today.
I left the Chromatic Training feeling empowered, more skillful as a yoga teacher and open-hearted.
Chromatic Yoga has taken my teaching as well as personal practice really to the next level, by educating undogmatically. The community of Chromatic Yogis offers love and support and I am very grateful for it.

                  Level 3: Integration

Integration is a term used for taking two or more separate components  and bringing them to work together in harmony. In Level 3 you learn how to take the Physical-Throughline (level 1) and the Thematic Throughline (level 2) and weave them through a class, workshop, retreat, or 3 day intensive.

In addition to mastering the through-lines, you will also become masterful at cuing isometric muscle engagements within each posture and being clear and concise in your delivery, in order to leave room for your theme.

Together we will take our coaching skills to the next level, supporting each other and developing the capacity to ask more, listen more, and say less. You will also develop the foundations of mentoring which blends coaching and teaching together, requiring greater skills and awareness.

Through coaching and being coached you will come to discover what your message is, and how to refine the delivery to your students. You will have daily practice giving dharma talks.

This breakdown is intended to give you an idea of what to expect but by no means conveys the totality of the experience you will have.

                          Plan Your trip

                          Transportation Information

                          Information

                          Airport and Train

There are several airports you can fly into to get to Connecticut. We highly recommend flying in to JFK, or LGA for ease in getting to one of the Metro North Train stations.

The Train has two locations to depart from: Grand Central Station, or Harlem 125th St. The two destinations closest to Goshen CT via train are Waterbury and Wassaic. (45 min car ride)

The Bus  station is located at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan (Port Authority) and you can take the Peter Pan Bus line up to Torrington CT. Buses leave Manhattan twice a day at 9:30am and 5pm and arrive at 11:40am and 7:30pm. Torrington is only 10minutes from Our Little Farm so we highly recommend this option.

Rent a Car: Should you decide to rent a car (not included) you have the option to fly into Hartford CT (BDL) or Albany, Boston, or Westchester. If you use a company such as Enterprise Rent-a-Car or Hertz you will likely be able to return the car in Torrington, and we will pick you up from there. It may come in handy to keep the car for the duration of the training if you want the ease of being on your own.

                          International Flights

We suggest flying into JFK, LGA or Newark and staying over one extra night. Plan to arrive in the U.S.A 2 days prior to the training. Stay one night in NY and then take the 9:30am bus from the NYC Bus Station at 42nd St Port Authority to Torrington Connecticut (CT) on the “Arrival Day” of the training.

Example: If your training starts June 25th, land in NY June 23rd. Travel to CT on June 24th for the meet and greet and welcome Dinner.

                          Train Station Phone App

NYC transportation is called the MTA, and they run the trains, buses, and subway systems. The Google Maps app is super helpful with getting around.

Download the app called Metro-North Train Time to see available train times on the Arrival day of your training. Or you can click here to go to the MTA website

                          Taxi to Goshen

There are several Limo services that serve Litchfield County Connecticut. We have had success in using the website https://www.onewaylimo.com the rate is typically

                          Bus

Taking the Bus to Torrington CT is easy, and there are two times to leave Manhattan: 9:30am and 7:30pm

Leave out of Port Authority (42nd St. and 8th Avenue)

Arrive Torrington CT, and we will pick you up (Only a 10 min drive to Our Little Farm)

Boston Arrivals: You can search for times on the above link for buses that leave from Logan airport at 9:15am or you can click here for other options.

                          Rent a Car

If you would like to rent a car for convenience you can check out www.orbitz.com or visit www.Hertz.com or www.enterprise.com

Check with the airport you are flying in and out of and see what the options are there. If you want to rent the car one way than Hertz and Enterprise are best.

                          Cash/Credit?

If you are traveling from over seas we do recommend bringing some cash with you to Goshen CT. The Majority of places accept credit however there are a couple of breakfast and dinner spots that are cash only. They do have ATM’s available at the cash only locations. $50-$100 cash should be enough.

Chromatic 1 was an incredibly valuable, informative, life changing experience for me as a relatively new teacher.  I had the privilege of taking two classes a day from Matt, breaking them down after to better understand the anatomical alignment, the elements of voice and the options for incorporating these methods into my sequences The best feeling as a teacher is to guide students to a place they haven’t been before so THEY own the journey and the result.  This experience happens in almost every class I take with Matt and I know I am not alone. In addition, I met amazing teachers, with different styles,  from all over the world which are now a part of the same global community and I truly feel the love and support they bring. The warmth and generosity of Matt welcoming us into his home and farm made it extra special. The circle continues to grow and I am so grateful to be a part of it.. Can’t wait for Chromatic 2!!

Chromatic Level 1 brought together the most incredible community of yoga teachers from all over the world. Learning from each other with this collective goal of deepening our yoga practice felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity. I began the training with a very basic understanding of anatomy and left it with a much deeper knowledge of muscle actions and joint relationships. The way I sequence my classes is now much more purposeful and my students immediately noticed a difference upon my return from training.  The training was very well-rounded to include time to practice, teach, learn, meditate, and connect with each other. Matt makes you feel part of the chromatic community right away and will make sure you feel supported throughout the training. Can’t wait for Level 2!
