Neck & Shoulder Release

The key to healing any physical issue is quite often very simple: Do the opposite of what caused the pain. For most of us that means change the arm positions, strengthen the opposite muscles that are getting worked on a daily basis at the computer or on our cell phone. DO the opposite. This class is designed to support you in building strength in muscles that are typically underused, and stretching muscles that are typically over used. That said your body and movement patterns are unique and you must begin the process of becoming more aware of them if you want to have long term relief.

THE GUNAS

Theme: The Guna’s

Finding balance on the inside amongst the chaos of the outside world is the core of the Guna’s. The Guna’s are the forces of nature that exist outside and within us. They pull in the two polarities of Outward and Inward, or Push and Pull. Rajas, is the upward rising, outward expressing, force that propels us into action is incredibly useful when we need to be productive, take control of our actions, take care of business, get out of bed, get on to the mat, push back against our ego and so on. Tamas is the downward flowing, inward reflection, force that pulls us back to rest in order to rejuvenate our vital energy, go to sleep at night, relax and enjoy quiet or alone time, listen to others as they express themselves, etc. 

When out of balance, Rajas can cause anxiety, anger, impatience, dissatisfaction and much more. Tamas on the other hand, when out of balance could produce lethargy, lack of motivation, trouble with digestion, etc. Understanding the polarity of these two energies, and knowing that they exist within us can help us to self reflect when we have gone too far in one direction or another. Through routine observation of these natural forces within us we begin to build something that is referred to as decrement – knowing what is appropriate for our well being. 

When we are able to harness these two forces and control their power, we can willingly push or pull ourselves back to the state of balance which is called Sattva. Sattva is how we feel when both the push and pull of rajas and tamas come into a state of equanimity. Some of us might call this the feeling of Bliss, Peace or Joy. Ultimately when you feel it, you know you are there, and you will want to bathe in the joy of it. The following practice is designed to help you move toward Sattva by harnessing the activity of the mind (rajas) and bringing it into greater focus through willful action in the body. In contrast this practice helps bring the body from the more tamasic state of stiffness or inactivity toward Sattva by activing the muscular system and building intentional heat. Together the mind and body work to find Sattva.

Meditation

The meditation template takes us through the outer layers of our being: Body, Energy, Mind. We use the inner layer of awareness to observe each part of ourselves. As a result we become less attached and identified to each layer allowing us to connect to our deepest layer called Bliss “Ananda”.

Samadhi

Samadhi is the experience we have when the mind realizes the totality of itself one part of an infinite whole. You are using the mind to read this right now, and from this level of consciousness there is no way for the mind to comprehend unless you have previously experienced this state of oneness with all things. I am using my lower levels of consciousness as well to explain and for that I am likely to fall short. That being said I will do my best. Using an analogy from one of my teachers, Alan Finger – Consiousness is like the ocean. When the ocean swells and crashes upon the shore, drops of water fly up in the air. These drops are still the ocean separated by time and space. We are those drops in relationship to the bigger more expansive ocean of consciousness. For brief moments in time we arise and take shape in the form of this body, collecting unique experiences in our mind and forming beliefs and identity. In meditation, the mind has the opportunity to realize this and come back to the awareness of all that is. In those moments when the mind returns to the understanding that it is simply a drop that is apart of the ocean, there is a feeling of indescribable goodness that overwhelms our being, yogis call this Samadhi. 

How Do We Reach Samadhi?

Samadhi is the result of your Sadhana (yogic practices). For the past month, I have been offering you teachings out of the yoga sutras, weaving them through the live classes, and sharing them here on this blog. We’ve discussed  “Abhyasa and Vairagya” and “Burning Samskara” amongst many others. Why are these practices necessary to experiencing Samadhi? Samadhi is the state of being when the intellect or budhi lets go of duality and releases into the realization that it is one with all things. The intellect is incredible, it allows us to understand life on the physical plane, dividing, defining, and systematically looking for like and unlike in everything. The Intellect’s ability to separate is incredible. We have spent our entire lives training the intellect, and therefor have become really good at separation. Unity or Oneness requires that the intellect surrenders to the reality that it is one of many tools. This requires that our identity or ego also surrenders to the fullness of reality that we are yes unique individuals that are a part of the magnificent power of nature, not separate but yet a thread woven into the fabric of something much grander. The Ego gets scared of the idea that it is not most important, so you have to remind it that this means it is not less than, it is actually far more than it thinks, it is a manifestation of the vast ocean of Awareness.

Maybe you want to experience the state of oneness with the universe and are ready to jump in but where to start? The Yoga Sutras are a guide map to this, but if you are going to practice one thing only its Self Reflection, Swadyaya. You can practice Self Reflection in your asana (physical practice) by observing the sensations of your body before, during and after each posture. You can do this through Pranayama, observation of the vital energy that pulses through your system. There are endless practices of Self Awareness. If you haven’t already, start with the live classes from the Month of March and join me for the asana and meditation practices throughout the month of April. I am committed to sharing dharma talks to inspire self awareness in order to support the dissolution of the intellect, and mergence into the state of oneness. Part 2: Foundations of Balance

Enjoy your practice, tuning into your body to find a greater sense of balance when on your hands.

LEAN & RESIST

Develop the reactionary neuromuscular pattern that whenever your body leans forward, your forearm muscles ignite and STOP the lean from happening. This above all else is what will lead you to balancing a handstand. Reminder: practicing the video once will not develop a neuromuscular pattern — patterns are developed by repetition. Today you begin to lay the foundation for the pattern to develop!

KICK SWITCHES PART 1

Kick Switches Part 1 is all about developing masterful stability and control in the upper body while the lower body moves through space. Do be sure to have a wall behind you when it comes time to do the kick switches. However, please make it a point not to touch the wall with your feet — it is BETTER to undershoot than overshoot. Good luck, stay patient, stay determined, and stay safe. Lots of love

BLANKET SLIDES

Taking the same skill sets you learned in Handstand Prep Positions 1 & 2, we now add dynamic movement and resistance in order to build strength and proprioception. Using a blanket on a floor is necessary for this drill; however, if you only have carpet, you will be able to use plastic or paper disposable plates in order to slide. These slides should be practiced 2-3 times per week in order to be effective.

HANDSTAND YOGA PRACTICE

Part 1: WARM UP

Part 1: WARM-UP

WARM-UP

This warm-up video is designed to be practiced prior to working on any of the videos in this training. It will warm up your joints and muscles to better prepare your body for Handstand. Over time, this video will also help you build strength. I also suggest picking 1-2 of the videos from Handstand Part 1 to practice each time in addition to the warm-up. This will ensure that you are continuing to build the necessary strength and technique as you embark about your journey to balance. 

HAND PUSH-UPS

This video is the heart of this training. Practicing this often is highly recommended, as it will imprint the necessary actions for balancing a handstand into your body and nervous system. Do not underestimate this exercise. You will be eager to skip it because it requires effort, and you may not be able to see the results right away. In my private handstand sessions, I do not move on with a student until they have a mastery over this position, because once this is mastered, the rest is relatively easy. Video yourself to be your own best coach.

Part 1: Wrists and Fingers

THE BREAKS

Developing strength in the fingers and the associated muscles of the forearm is probably the most important aspect of balancing a handstand. First and foremost, putting all your weight in your hands can be challenging for the wrists, so it is incredibly important to develop the appropriate strength to support the integrity of the joint. Secondly, if you have strength and intelligence in the fingers and wrists, handstand is possible!
