HEART OPENING MECHANICS

Heart opening mechanics extend far beyond simply reaching into a backbend. In Chromatic Yoga, Matt reminds us that lasting change begins by teaching the nervous system how individual muscles and joint actions coordinate with one another. In today’s video, the skill is external rotation of the arm, encouraging the scapula to posteriorly tilt while the shoulder head glides gently up and back. As the shoulder blades subtly retract, the chest naturally begins to broaden and the ribs move forward, creating the conditions for a healthier spinal extension rather than forcing it. Instead of thinking only about arching the back, we begin to recognize how the shoulders inform the spine. By refining these smaller actions first, we create heart opening mechanics that are not only deeper, but also more stable, intentional, and sustainable.

DANCER POSE PREPARATION

Matt begins by exploring Dancer Pose from the shoulder rather than the leg. With the hand resting on the outside of the foot, we first guide the top of the shoulder gently up and back, immediately allowing the chest to move forward with greater ease. From there, the next layer is introduced through external rotation of the arm. Instead of simply holding the foot, the hand gradually rotates around to the inside, allowing the biceps to turn outward while maintaining the shoulder head behind the line of the chest. Matt cautions that many practitioners accidentally rotate internally instead, which pushes the shoulder forward and diminishes the backbend. Once the shoulder remains organized, the leg can actively kick back while the chest rotates forward, transforming the posture from a passive stretch into an integrated expression of heart opening mechanics.

HEART OPENING MECHANICS: SHOULDER ACTIONS THAT INFORM THE SPINE

THE SHOULDER IN HALF CAMEL POSE

Half Camel Pose offers another opportunity to refine the same sequence of actions. With one hand on the heel, Matt encourages us to begin by lifting the top of the shoulder slightly before guiding it back. External rotation then follows, naturally allowing the ribs to glide forward into spinal extension. Rather than thinking about dropping backward, the emphasis remains on organizing the shoulder first so the spine can respond. Looking toward the supporting hand reinforces this relationship before the opposite arm extends overhead or bends behind the head. The posture becomes less about reaching farther and more about coordinating the shoulder, rib cage, and spine into one continuous movement. Heart opening mechanics emerge through precision, not force, creating a backbend that feels expansive without sacrificing stability.

WILD THING SET UP

Before entering Wild Thing, Matt carefully prepares the lower body so the shoulder can move with greater freedom. Beginning from a supported side plank, the bent leg steps behind the body while the back toes turn outward, creating a stable foundation. He then shifts attention to the upper body, repeating the same sequence introduced earlier: the shoulder head moves gently up and back, the arm externally rotates, and the scapula settles into a supportive position for spinal extension. Only after these actions are established does the weight travel toward the feet as the hips lift. Matt also emphasizes pressing confidently through the grounded thumb, creating a strong connection between the hand and shoulder while allowing the chest to continue opening. The familiar mechanics appear once again in a completely different posture, reinforcing that thoughtful movement patterns transfer across many backbends.

LET THE SHOULDERS LEAD THE SPINE

One of the most valuable lessons from these progressions is that the spine rarely works in isolation. Heart opening mechanics become more accessible when we appreciate how the shoulders create the conditions for movement rather than simply reacting to it. As Matt demonstrates through Dancer Pose, Half Camel, and Wild Thing, the repeated pattern of lifting the shoulder, guiding it back, and externally rotating the arm teaches the nervous system a reliable sequence it can revisit again and again. Over time, these coordinated actions become less like individual instructions and more like an integrated movement strategy. Rather than chasing a deeper backbend, we begin to cultivate a body that understands how to organize itself, allowing openness, strength, and spinal extension to arise together with greater confidence and ease.

Matt’s upcoming  50Hr. Chromatic Certification helps us to understand these types of integrative movements more deeply.  Register today to reserve your spot.

Perfect Protraction For Crow Pose

Perfect Protraction For Crow Pose

BAKASANA

PERFECT PROTRACTION FOR CROW POSE

When working toward perfect protraction for Crow Pose, it’s essential to understand the role of the serratus anterior, the “fingertip” muscles that wrap around the rib cage and attach to the inner edge of the shoulder blades. Matt describes them as the driving force behind any forward-pushing movement, from boxing to arm balances. These muscles are responsible for that “lifted” feeling when we press the floor away beneath us. Without this activation, the chest collapses, and the arms bear the brunt of the work. Learning to engage the serratus anterior transforms Crow Pose from a heavy arm balance into an integrated, buoyant experience where strength and lift coexist.

GET THE MECHANICS DOWN

Matt begins with a simple yet revealing wall drill. With the forearms placed at shoulder height, hands at forehead height, we practice retraction and protraction.  This involves drawing the shoulder blades together, then pushing them apart. At this stage, the focus is precision, not power. The goal is to feel how the shoulder blades glide and wrap around the rib cage. This movement builds heat and sets the foundation for proper shoulder mechanics before any weight is added. By refining this awareness early on, we prepare our joints for stability and longevity in arm balances. Protraction becomes not just a motion, but a habit of intelligent movement that protects the shoulders from strain.

CHATURANGA & CROW PRACTICE

Translating this awareness into action, Matt layers in Chaturanga and Crow drills. In Chaturanga, we spread the fingers wide, slightly turn the hands out, and push down and in to fire up the serratus and pectoralis. This prevents the shoulders from collapsing forward and maintains lift through the upper back.
To reinforce this pattern, he takes us to the floor for Chaturanga on the back, using blocks or weights. Here, gravity works in reverse, and we feel how the scapulae widen as we “press up.” The transition from Chaturanga to Crow on the back trains the same coordination, knees hug in, tailbone tucks, and the upper body maintains protraction. These drills establish neuromuscular connection before Crow Pose ever touches the ground.

CROW POSE ON BLOCKS

Now, the mechanics meet the mat. Placing the feet on blocks removes the fear of balance so we can focus purely on shoulder control. Knees squeeze in, elbows hug inward, and hips lift high. Matt emphasizes that Crow Pose shouldn’t be just a head bob from the elbows; it’s a full body integration that begins with elevation of the hips and scapular movement.
We move through retraction and protraction at the top of the shape, feeling the difference between sinking and lifting. As we lean forward, the protraction deepens, allowing the shoulders to stay stable and light. A soft cushion in front provides peace of mind, but the real support comes from the strength of the serratus anterior; it’s the engine behind the lift.

PRACTICE OVER PERFECTION

Crow Pose mastery comes not from muscling through but from cultivating awareness in the shoulder stabilizers, core, and breath. Each layer, the wall drill, the Chaturanga sequence, and the block practice creates a more refined relationship between effort and control. Protraction is not a static position but an active expression of power that evolves with consistent attention.
In this “perfect protraction for Crow Pose” approach, success lies in understanding mechanics, not chasing shape. With repetition and focus, the shoulders learn to support the lift, transforming Crow Pose from something heavy to something that truly flies.

To break unhelpful patterns in the body, we need to train with intention. Matt’s upcoming online Bring the Heat immersion does just that; each practice blends mindful repetition with fire-building techniques that rewire strength, mobility, and endurance from the inside out.

Retraction Of The Scapula

Retraction Of The Scapula

SHOULDER ACTIONS

RETRACTION OF THE SCAPULA

It may appear that scapular retraction holds less weight in finding deeper backbends, but this action can be quite significant in what we experience when it comes to strength, stability, and spaciousness in heart opening postures.  “Scapular retraction activates the rhomboids and middle trapezius muscles, helping to stabilize the shoulder girdle and protect the neck and upper spine” (Long, 2010, The Key Muscles of Yoga). In today’s blog, we’ll explore how Matt’s Chromatic approach breaks down scapular retraction across three postures.  Wild Thing, Upward Facing Dog, and Camel Pose highlight exactly how we can access these backbends more fully.  It’s not only how we review retraction of the scapula, there’s also a hidden action that deepens the strength and stability of these postures.

Matt’s teaching always goes beyond the “how”, but also informs us of the “why” these actions are so imperative.

WALKTHROUGH WILD THING

In this walkthrough, Matt breaks down the key role that retraction of the scapula plays in achieving a strong and safe Wild Thing. Focusing on the standing arm, he explains that external rotation of the upper arm should come first, followed by a posterior tilt of the scapula.  When practicing with Matt, we come to understand the importance of layering and sequencing.  This sequencing allows for effective scapular retraction, keeping the shoulder head back and preventing it from punching forward. With the scapula properly retracted, the spine can rotate toward the shoulder blade, creating space for a deeper, more aligned backbend. This action not only enhances the postural precision of the pose but also recruits the rhomboid muscles, stabilizing the shoulder girdle and upper back. When we review retraction of the scapula in Wild Thing, we uncover how subtle engagement leads to both expansion and support, helping us access depth without sacrificing control or structure.

RETRACTION OF THE SCAPULA: LEARN THROUGH 3 POSTURES

UNDERSTANDING UPWARD FACING DOG

In Matt’s breakdown of Upward Facing Dog, we review retraction of the scapula by placing the hands wide on two yoga blocks. In the full class, Matt explains how a wider hand position on the two blocks makes it easier to access scapular retraction by allowing the shoulder heads to move behind the chest.  This ability to dissolve helps the shoulder blades glide down the back and draw toward one another, cultivating the foundation for strength and spaciousness in the upper body. Once the shoulders are properly retracted, Matt layers in an optional isometric internal rotation of the upper arms. This is the “secret” action that can take us to the next level of stability.  However, he emphasizes that this should be subtle and only added after establishing solid retraction.

CRITIQUE CAMEL POSE

Matt begins with Half Camel Pose, an ideal starting point to critique how scapular retraction shows up on each side of the body. By working one arm at a time, we can isolate and refine the shoulder mechanics with greater clarity and precision. The key actions are to lift the shoulder up, then back, followed by external rotation—this combination initiates proper retraction of the scapula. Once these movements become second nature and imprinted into the nervous system, we can begin layering in a subtle isometric internal rotation without losing the retraction. In Full Camel Pose, with both hands on the heels, Matt offers the option of beginning with a more neutral shoulder position. However, he cautions against moving too far into internal rotation, as this can compromise the retraction needed for effective spinal extension. When we review retraction of the scapula here, it becomes clear how essential it is for both stability and depth in heart-opening postures.

TAKE NOTE

Take note—the body remembers.  This is one of the biggest takeaways and gifts we receive when we practice with Matt.  When we repeat and refine actions like retraction of the scapula, our nervous system begins to record these patterns, allowing them to become second nature. In time, we move with greater intention and less mental effort, shifting from constant correction into seamless, conscious coordination.  This is where the practice evolves: we remain lifelong students of our bodies, yet we also become teachers—guiding our movement with clarity and purpose. The techniques explored in Wild Thing, Upward Facing Dog, and Camel Pose are not just drills; they’re tools for transformation, helping us lead with structure and freedom in equal measure. Want to take it further? There’s still time to explore these concepts in depth through Matt’s Spanda Online Immersion. And if you’re curious about refining your shoulder mechanics even more, don’t miss his FREE Chaturanga Online Workshop on April 5th, 2025—a perfect next step in your movement journey.
