Welcome to the Shoulder Revelation immersion! I am delighted to share this particular experience with you because my shoulders have been the source of much pain but also relief in my life. My practice began with tremendous pain in my left shoulder, which guided me down the path of curiosity. I began educating myself on anatomy and biomechanics because I wanted to practice yoga, but I also didn’t want to be in pain while I was doing so. In this immersion, I will be sharing the tools that I have learned over the last 10+ years of exploring the shoulder girdle. Thanks for making the choice to practice with me!

Welcome to the April 2021 Immersion

I am super thrilled to be sharing this particular immersion with you, as arm balances were the tipping point for how I got started teaching yoga. At a party with some friends one night, they asked me, “What is this yoga stuff? Are you just stretching all day?” I had to explain to them that it’s much more than that. I told them how I was becoming more aware of my body and able to do things I never thought possible. That’s when I showed them some arm balances. They asked to learn, and I invited them to practice at a studio with me, but they thought yoga studios were weird. So we came to an agreement that I would teach them, and my teaching career began 2 days later. Let’s do this!

Welcome to the March 2021 Immersion

Welcome, I am excited to practice yoga, pranayama and meditation with you. This immersion is designed to bring back the magical trifecta that brings about an overall well being in the body and mind. Each class with include a yoga flow or technique based practice that will prepare us to sit. We will then move into pranayam to aling our energy. From that optimal space we will move into meditation practice together to free the mind from stuck thought or emotional patterns.

The Nadis Chart

To clear up a mistake I made in one of the classes I created a chart of the Nadi’s and what sides of the body, what nostril, and which hemisphere of the brain is correlated with the particular energy channel. 

Padadhirasana

One thing that isn’t stated in the chart is the nerve between the 5 & 6th rib that stimulates the mucus membrane in the opposite side nostril. This is where I was getting my self twisted. The Ida Nadi is left body & Left Nostril HOWEVER the nerve to stimulate the left nostril is under the right arm pit.

Welcome to the February 2021 Immersion

Welcome to “The Dance, named for its focus on the transitions betweet the postures. Typically we divide yoga into Alignment or Flow, and when working on alignment we tend to be holding postures and creating micro movement, and when we are flowing we tend to be more emotionally in vested and less technical. This immersion is to help us bridge tthe gap – allow alignment, or what I call “technique” to be present in our practice even when we are flowing. This will help us to cultivate a flow practice that isnt just an emotional release, but a physical and energetic awakening as well.  Together we will learn how technique doesnt just apply to stillness, but to transitions – alignment off the mat when going through change is the ultimate goal of our sadhana (practice).

YOGA FOR FLEXIBILITY AND STRENGTH

Welcome to the January 2021 Immersion

Welcome to “The Pulse”, named after the Tantra Yoga principle of Spanda. Spanda is the dance of expansion and contraction, not to be confused with balancing opposites, Spanda is the recognition that all things are on their way to contraction or toward expansion. Acknowledging the natural rhythm of the universe can be incredibly relieving and simultaneously empowering. The challenge most of us face is that we cannot control the unfolding of our experience, and yet we waste much of our energy trying to do so. Yoga teaches us to control what we can – our actions, thoughts, behaviors – and let go of what we cannot such as the results, outcomes, timing, unfolding of events, etc. 

The Pulse exists in all things – acknowledge that right now your heart is pulsing, contracting and expanding over and over again. 

How about your lungs, after every exhale we then inhale again. The seasons, life/death/life again and again. Everything is pulsing, the universe is in this constant cycle. Rather than fight it, we learn to ride the waves, and focus on what is within our control like our muscular system. For the most part we have tremendous power to strengthen and lengthen our muscles in order to keep them healthy throughout our life.

Full Wheel Workshop

Full Wheel is a highly popular posture in many hatha yoga, vinyasa, and power practices, but popular doesn’t mean it’s easy. I’ve personally struggled with this posture, and I have watched countless students struggle or feel awkward when the teacher says “option to lift up into wheel pose.” In this workshop, my goal is to share the techniques that demystify wheel pose and provide you with a step-by-step breakdown of how to gain access to it within your body’s current capabilities. Strength and flexibility take repetition to develop, but technique can be gained in a single class. ALL 3 elements are required, so I suggest repeating the class multiple times. I also highly recommend another Name Your Price workshop that focuses on backbends, called “Resilience of the Heart”.

Resilience of The Heart

ABHYASA & VAIRAGYA

Resilience as it is defined by common understanding is the ability to bounce back or recover from challenging experiences. That definition works just fine but I like to think of it more as one who is able to adjust and recalibrate their mindset and actions according to the current circumstances. In any case resilience is something we can all strive to implement in our lives simply because life itself is challenging. There is no way to go through life without facing challenges, so it behoves us to embrace them not as something to avoid but rather something to invite as a means to expansion and growth.

Abhyasa and Vairagya are teachings in the yogic texts that can help us regulate our energies when facing challenges, or better stated become more self aware to how we are dealing with challenges so that we can make better decisions, and take action according to what is present for us. Abhyasa means well placed effort, and Vairagya is surrender or letting go of. The two go perfectly hand in hand and in my opinion should always be taught simultaneously unless someone falls too far on one side of the spectrum than the other. Even then its beneficial to be reminded that there is no right or wrong or good or bad when it comes to our mindset and effort but rather a spectrum for which we can become more awake to.

THE BREAKTHROUGH!

Welcome to the October Immersion: THE BREAKTHROUGH

The Breakthrough was born out of the teachings of Anugraha which means Revelation. We all have the power within us to experience an opening, an aha, an awakening to what we previously did not know or understand. This is the foundation of this immersion. 

when I was in the earlier part of my career I decided to take another teacher training to expand my practice, and on day one my teacher asked “In your physical practice what would you like to work on for the next year?”

That was strange! no one ever asked what I wanted to work on for a whole year. I chose hip openers because at that time I struggled with doing postures like pigeon pose without having knee pain, my hips were just LOCKED UP.

I wanted to learn how to do postures like lotus, leg over the head, and the fun looking arm balances that required such hip flexibility.

For the next 16 months I studied the hips both intellectually and physically.

For the October Immersion, titled “The Breakthrough” you will be learning hip opening practices to help increase your range of motion, flexibility and strength which will grant you access to some pretty cool arm balances. YES you will learn arm balance techniques to build strength and confidence as well!

There is one posture in particular that was requested – one that I NEVER TAUGHT Online before, so this is incredibly exciting. I will leave this as a surprise for now.

The 3 Pillars of Hip Opening

There are 3 pillars of all Hip Openers that are important to understand. Technique, refers to the way in which we go about any given task, in this case hip opening. There are many methods to gaining flexibility in the body, but the one that I find is most effective and long lasting is called facilitated stretching, which simply means activating the muscles you are stretching. Employing this technique, this workshop focuses on helping you develop a deep understanding of what the muscles of your hips feel like when activated. I give precise cues to help you engage target muscles in simple postures so that you develop a strong sense of body awareness. The last part of this workshop will help you develop length in the muscles that you learned to engage and strengthen in the first part of the workshop.

Technique

Facilitated Stretching: Active engagement (muscle contraction) of the muscles being stretched results in a deep relaxation of the target muscle upon releasing that engagement. This results in greater range of motion. My suggestion is to work on activating these muscles when you are in less of a stretch, learning what it feels like to engage them, and then when it comes time for deeper stretches be more subtle with the engagement of the muscles. In this workshop I take you through strong engagements in standing postures to develop your body awareness, but as the workshop goes along and your awareness grows, simply soften your effort to about 15% engagement of the targeted muscle group.

Strength

Strength requires effort, and for those of us that come to the yoga practice to relax, it can often be challenging to drum up the energy inside to engage our muscles. It is important to realize that our deepest relaxation happens when we have spent all of our energy, and are left with the nothingness that feels like pure bliss after a hard practice. While this workshop focuses on very simple postures, it does require focus of the mind and strength of the body. Stay with the practice, keep your focus, feel your body, and you will receive the powerful results in the end.

Length

By using the technique of facilitated stretching you will notice that there are significant benefits when it comes to increased flexibility. Not only does facilitated stretching support greater flexibility, but the awareness of how to engage the muscles of the hips helps adjust the alignment of your bones in order to target each muscle in your hips individually. This is highly beneficial in that through your increased body awareness and strength which allows you to shift your bones you will be able to intentionally shift a posture to stretch what is specifically tighter in your body, and stop over stretching what is already flexible. This approach provides a great ability to find harmony in the body.

Pigeon Without Knee Pain

Pigeon Pose often creates pain in the front knee joint for a number of reasons. One of those reasons is that it stretches the gluteus Maximus with attaches to the I.T band which attaches to the tibia or shin bone. This means that when you stretch your buttocks it pulls on the shin bone which may cause pain or strain near the knee for some people. Another reason for knee pain in pigeon pose is the pressure  and possible compression on the inner knee when folding forward. In this video I go through a step by step approach to minimize the potential for knee pain in pigeon posture.

The Yoga Butt

Avoid over stretching the hamstring attachments near the sit bones by actively pressing them down toward the earth in forward folds. This action is confusing in that we want to keep the pelvis folded forward (anterior tilt) but activate the hamstrings as if we are trying to posterior tilt.

A Different Approach

 

 

This approach is completely different than the approach I offer in pigeon without knee pain, and the hips rock and unlock ’em video. At the risk of creating some confusion I want to present to you another version of pigeon pose that focuses on internal rotation of the upper femur bone rather that external rotation close to the knee. For some people this creates a deeper hip stretch and supports less compression in the knee. I  enjoy both variations depending on what I am trying to target in my body.

 

The Feet and Ankles

 

 

In the Hips workshop I go over everting the ankle joint. Many people find this action reveals that the outer shin muscles (fibularis muscles) are weak. This video offers exercises to strengthen these muscles along with several other muscles of the lower leg and ankle.

I want to acknowledge how amazing it is that you have taken the time to support the growth of your body awareness. It is one thing to want health and freedom, but another thing to take the actions to move toward it. My suggestion is to repeat this workshop weekly as you will continue to extract more and more information and will be better able to integrate it into your body over time. Also bring the activations into your daily yoga practice so that you are developing technique, strength, and length every time you step on to the mat.
