Practicing backbends in yoga can feel uncomfortable and even be painful without the right techniques. The Heart Opening Immersion provides you with the biomechanics and anatomically driven techniques to support you in deepening your flexibility without harming your body. We will work on several foundational yoga backbends such as Cobra, Camel, Bow, Dancer and Full Wheel. We will also work toward more complex yoga backbends such as King Pigeon, King Cobra and Scorpion. EVERY class is accessible, with a step-by-step approach that is easy to follow and implement.

    My first immersion was at beginning of lockdown as I had so much time on my hands. I now set time aside to join every month as I have learnt so much in the last year. Backbends have always been my nemesis, this months immersion has unlocked and given me so much more confidence in my backbend practice.

    I have just completed the last of the 12 classes and am already looking forward to revisiting them. I appreciated how the techniques were presented (easily digestible) and built on from one class to the next. As the postures progressed, previous postures were integrated in the warmup sequences. I think that pace helped integrate the techniques into muscle memory. Also, revisiting the postures during the month helped mark progress – I was really surprised to see the difference between the first few classes compared to the last couple. I also notice a difference in my general daily living posture about 2/3 the way through this immersion. During the day it feels like I am naturally standing and sitting a bit straighter, and my shoulders are resting comfortably further down by back. In my book – that is a bigger win than I ever anticipated.

    After the wonderful experience with my first immersion (arm balances), I knew that I wanted to learn about heart openers from Matt. Backbends typically bother my low back and S-I joint, so I tend to avoid them. After learning 3-part cobra, a technique that he taught us over and over again until it became ingrained, I have no pain at all, only freedom. YES! This technique can be applied to ANY backbend. As my body learned to open up (and not fear backbends) I also found my energy increased. There’s an energetic “high” to backbends that is delicious! I love the progression of these immersions: from foundation, to simple poses to more complex poses. Matt encourages us to listen to our bodies and that it’s not the pose that matters, but rather the opportunity to learn about our strengths, weaknesses and limitations. I love that. These immersion are great value for the amount learned!

The May 2021 Immersion focuses on providing you with the necessary techniques to develop your body awareness for pain-free yoga backbends. Some of the postures you will develop are

  • Cobra Pose, Bow Pose, Camel Pose
  • Wild Thing, Dancer Pose, Chapasana
  • Full Wheel and its variations
  • King Cobra, King Pigeon, King Dancer

Through this yoga immersion focused on backbends, you will find a new relationship with your body and ultimately feel better on a daily basis. Another name for backbends is heart openers, which conveys an opening rather than a bending. This subtle difference in language is important, as it reveals techniques to unlock the spine rather than bend it. That said, I use the terms interchangeably since you may know these yoga poses under one or the other category.  This immersion is aimed at helping you feel good inside and out, cultivating strength, flexibility and awareness!

NO Problem, with our private Facebook group you are welcome to ask questions, post video snippets for me to assess and connect with the community. You get lifetime, anytime, anywhere access. HOW DOES IT WORK?

When you sign up for the immersion, you will gain access to an exclusive members area of theyogimatt.com. When you are logged in, you will have access and be able to watch both the livestream that day and any previously aired livestreams from that month.

ARE THERE RECURRING PAYMENTS?

NO. You are paying for access to 1 month of classes; after that, you will be provided a discounted rate should you want to continue practicing regularly. You will NOT be automatically billed. THIS IS A 1-TIME PAYMENT that gives you access to the classes in the respective month that you purchase.

IS THIS TOO ADVANCED FOR ME?

Matt specializes in teaching ALL levels of yoga practices, providing modifications and options throughout each class. These immersions are suitable for anyone with 1-3 months of yoga practice or more. You do not need to have a regular practice, nor do you need to be flexible or strong. First-time yogis are welcome so long as you have no major injuries. Each class focuses on a different yoga pose so we gain a greater understanding of our body within the asana practice.

Covid_19 bought Matt into my home and my yoga practice. This last month I have learn’t so much it has deepened my practice and my understanding of the anatomy & biomechanics and how we use both in every asana we practice. He has also helped in my teaching, ie asking my students to think about the foot as a tripod “big toe, pinkie toe, heel ” I never imagined I would learn so much from the immersion.
