Welcome to the September 2022 Handstand & Meditation Immersion. I am thrilled to be sharing this very unique experience with you. These are two of the most exciting practices for me as they have provided me with the most personal development in my life on and off the mat. This is why I decided to offer them to you. In this immersion, our goal is to develop strength and attention and a greater proprioception and awareness of the internal barriers that may be holding us back, on and off the mat.
Handstand is a relatively simple pose, and as many of you may have come to figure out, the simple things in life can often be the most challenging. Meditation is a practice that seems to have lost its place in the “yoga” practices of today. The irony is that meditation IS the yoga practice, and eveything else, such as asana, is simply to support our meditation practice.

Welcome to the June 2022 Anatomy of the Heart immersion. I am thrilled to be sharing this experience with you. In this immersion, our goal is to develop a greater understanding of the body through anatomical visualizations and embodied exercises while expanding our heart-opening practice. Seeing the muscles prior to feeling them in action will enhance our efforts and improve the learning process both mentally and kinesthetically.
Heart openers are unique. In my 14+ years of teaching these complex postures, I have noticed that you cannot simply learn technique and access your fullest potential. You need both technique AND a mindset that prepares the body for opening up. Backbends are the oposite of fight/flight/freeze postures, which means the nervous system cannot be in a state of high arousal (sympathetic nervous system) when we approach them. In other words, if we are feeling fearful, our body will close off and tighten in the front, making backbends feel painful and impossible. Yet at the same time, we need to be awake and present in order to articulate the appropiate actions in the body so that we do not injure ourselves. It is a delicate balance, but you are more than capable of accessing this state of “awake yet calm.”
To help us with both the technical side of backbends and the “heart” side of them, classes will go back and forth between anatomical and themed. I look forward to diving in with you.

Mobility is one of the most important factors of physical well-being. Whether you would like to move more gracefully on and off the mat, feel better physically, or stave off aging, this immersion is designed to help you do so. By increasing the strength of our muscles through a wide range of motion, we will increase both passive and active flexibility. Most people seek flexibility through passive stretching only. This is a huge mistake because this approach does not increase muscle integrity and does not increase neuromuscular activity. Together, we will increase flexibility by increasing neuromuscular activity—strengthening muscles that increase range of motion. We will also learn how stability provides the body a sense of safety, which builds a trust between you and your body and often allows for greater relaxation of tense muscles.

I am super thrilled to be sharing this particular immersion with you, as arm balances were the tipping point for how I got started teaching yoga. At a party with some friends one night, they asked me, “What is this yoga stuff? Are you just stretching all day?” I had to explain to them that it’s much more than that. I told them how I was becoming more aware of my body and able to do things I never thought possible. That’s when I showed them some arm balances. They asked to learn, and I invited them to practice at a studio with me, but they thought yoga studios were weird. So we came to an agreement that I would teach them, and my teaching career began 2 days later. Let’s do this! |

To clear up a mistake I made in one of the classes I created a chart of the Nadi’s and what sides of the body, what nostril, and which hemisphere of the brain is correlated with the particular energy channel.
Padadhirasana
One thing that isn’t stated in the chart is the nerve between the 5 & 6th rib that stimulates the mucus membrane in the opposite side nostril. This is where I was getting my self twisted. The Ida Nadi is left body & Left Nostril HOWEVER the nerve to stimulate the left nostril is under the right arm pit.

Welcome to “The Dance, named for its focus on the transitions betweet the postures. Typically we divide yoga into Alignment or Flow, and when working on alignment we tend to be holding postures and creating micro movement, and when we are flowing we tend to be more emotionally in vested and less technical. This immersion is to help us bridge tthe gap – allow alignment, or what I call “technique” to be present in our practice even when we are flowing. This will help us to cultivate a flow practice that isnt just an emotional release, but a physical and energetic awakening as well. Together we will learn how technique doesnt just apply to stillness, but to transitions – alignment off the mat when going through change is the ultimate goal of our sadhana (practice). |

Welcome to “The Pulse”, named after the Tantra Yoga principle of Spanda. Spanda is the dance of expansion and contraction, not to be confused with balancing opposites, Spanda is the recognition that all things are on their way to contraction or toward expansion. Acknowledging the natural rhythm of the universe can be incredibly relieving and simultaneously empowering. The challenge most of us face is that we cannot control the unfolding of our experience, and yet we waste much of our energy trying to do so. Yoga teaches us to control what we can – our actions, thoughts, behaviors – and let go of what we cannot such as the results, outcomes, timing, unfolding of events, etc. The Pulse exists in all things – acknowledge that right now your heart is pulsing, contracting and expanding over and over again. How about your lungs, after every exhale we then inhale again. The seasons, life/death/life again and again. Everything is pulsing, the universe is in this constant cycle. Rather than fight it, we learn to ride the waves, and focus on what is within our control like our muscular system. For the most part we have tremendous power to strengthen and lengthen our muscles in order to keep them healthy throughout our life. I look forward to sharing these 12 practices with you, exploring spanda, and the health of our physical body. |

WHEEL
Full Wheel is a highly popular posture in many hatha yoga, vinyasa, and power practices, but popular doesn’t mean it’s easy. I’ve personally struggled with this posture, and I have watched countless students struggle or feel awkward when the teacher says “option to lift up into wheel pose.” In this workshop, my goal is to share the techniques that demystify wheel pose and provide you with a step-by-step breakdown of how to gain access to it within your body’s current capabilities. Strength and flexibility take repetition to develop, but technique can be gained in a single class. ALL 3 elements are required, so I suggest repeating the class multiple times. I also highly recommend another Name Your Price workshop that focuses on backbends, called “Resilience of the Heart”.

Gratitude and celebration are the spirit that underline holiday seasons. For many the holidays are challenging times and celebration is difficult. In this immersion we will be developing gratitude for this body that has served us for another year around the sun, and supporting it with our physical practice of yoga. We gather to celebrate the energy of life that is pulsing through us, and the opportunity to share that with one another.
This immersion focuses on the Hips which are said to address our past, our Heart which helps us foster connection to the force of energy pulsing inside of us, and Handstand which requires both dedication, playfulness and light hearted laughter of not taking ourselves too seriously

ABHYASA & VAIRAGYA
Resilience as it is defined by common understanding is the ability to bounce back or recover from challenging experiences. That definition works just fine but I like to think of it more as one who is able to adjust and recalibrate their mindset and actions according to the current circumstances. In any case resilience is something we can all strive to implement in our lives simply because life itself is challenging. There is no way to go through life without facing challenges, so it behoves us to embrace them not as something to avoid but rather something to invite as a means to expansion and growth.
Abhyasa and Vairagya are teachings in the yogic texts that can help us regulate our energies when facing challenges, or better stated become more self aware to how we are dealing with challenges so that we can make better decisions, and take action according to what is present for us. Abhyasa means well placed effort, and Vairagya is surrender or letting go of. The two go perfectly hand in hand and in my opinion should always be taught simultaneously unless someone falls too far on one side of the spectrum than the other. Even then its beneficial to be reminded that there is no right or wrong or good or bad when it comes to our mindset and effort but rather a spectrum for which we can become more awake to.

It is an honor to have the opportunity to share this practice with you. Together we will be taking a journey through our spine, working to find the areas that may be blind spots to our awareness, pain points, weaknesses or tightnesses. This type of practice presents many opportunities for all of us. For some this will leave us feeling better in our mind and Body as we go throughout our day, for others it will give tools to share as teachers, and for some it will leave you with a more advanced skillset and the ability to access new postures. Regardless of why you are here or what you get out of this, the most important thing is that you decided to take care of yourself. The Breakthrough was born out of the teachings of Anugraha which means Revelation. We all have the power within us to experience an opening, an aha, an awakening to what we previously did not know or understand. This is the foundation of this immersion.
when I was in the earlier part of my career I decided to take another teacher training to expand my practice, and on day one my teacher asked “In your physical practice what would you like to work on for the next year?”
That was strange! no one ever asked what I wanted to work on for a whole year. I chose hip openers because at that time I struggled with doing postures like pigeon pose without having knee pain, my hips were just LOCKED UP.
I wanted to learn how to do postures like lotus, leg over the head, and the fun looking arm balances that required such hip flexibility.
For the next 16 months I studied the hips both intellectually and physically.
For the October Immersion, titled “The Breakthrough” you will be learning hip opening practices to help increase your range of motion, flexibility and strength which will grant you access to some pretty cool arm balances. YES you will learn arm balance techniques to build strength and confidence as well!
There is one posture in particular that was requested – one that I NEVER TAUGHT Online before, so this is incredibly exciting. I will leave this as a surprise for now.

Congratulations, you have committed to yourself! Thank you for choosing to practice with me and allow me to be your guide through this experience. I am excited that together we are creating a vibrational energy that will support each of us in our journey. I look forward to sharing the techniques in the asana (physical) practice that have awakened my body in a way I could have never imagined. Matt as a teacher is Brilliant! He will identify muscles, tell you which one to use, when to use it, and how to use it with warnings to avoid injury. He is very clear on what is appropriate for your level, that gave me a lot of confidence to work in the moment with out concern of keeping up. Having the access to go back and look at the lesson again is priceless! I was also very happy with the meditation, in the past I have struggled to sit and quiet my busy mind. Another fabulous immersion! This is one of my favorites. Matt incorporates various strength drills into the practice that prepared us for handstand. He showed different levels of handstand prep and the use of a chair for the drills added new awareness of muscle strength and weakness, as well as challenged my proprioception when upside down. I loved the meditation component with its focus on integration; sitting in the stillness in order to allow our body to integrate all of the knowledge we learned in practice. Thanks so much Matt!
